Linchpins

In his book 'Linchpin' Seth Godin describes these people who invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They find a shortcut that other miss, see a new way to resolve conflict, make a connection with someone others couldn't reach.

If this is the case, then maybe our railway needs to look out for these types in our (paid and volunteer) workforce, to encourage them to use these invaluable abilities, which are described in the book as
1. providing a unique interface between members of the organisation
2. delivering unique creativity
3. managing a situation of great complexity
4. leading customers
5. inspiring staff
6. providing deep domain knowledge
7. possessing a unique talent

We should welcome linchpins to contribute and develop the attributes that make them such, and encourage them to get a lot better at their unique talent.

Special places in special times need special people.
